Arms Sales to Israel
The death and destruction in the region at present is intolerable. I appreciate that every time you may turn on the news or access social media, there is a high likelihood you will see intensely distressing coverage in relation to this matter.
The UK Government has announced the outcome of its review into UK arms exports licensing to Israel. Following a rigorous process in line with the UK’s legal obligations, it concluded that there is a clear risk that military exports to Israel, where used for military operations in Gaza, might be used in serious violations of International Humanitarian Law. As a result, it has suspended approximately 30 licences for exports to Israel for items which could be used in the current conflict. This includes components for fighter aircraft, parts for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, naval systems and targeting equipment.
Although not a blanket ban, it effectively covers all arms exports where there is evidence to suggest illegal use in the current conflict in Gaza.
The UK Government is committed to seeing peace in the area and a two-state solution that allows Palestine to exist as a sovereign state. The Prime Minister has met with the UN security council and spoken out to call for a ceasefire and cooperate with the global community to achieve lasting peace.
Nations have a right to defend themselves, but there will be no end to these conflicts until all nations agree to cease any continuation of fighting or developing aggressions. Any one nation is not placed in a position to restrain from action if another nation continues any proactive offense against them. It is never too late for peace.
I urge all parties to show restraint, invest in diplomacy and engage in ceasefire negotiations. I believe only a ceasefire deal can relieve civilian suffering, restore communities’ sense of security, and open the possibility of a path to a secure and dignified peace.
